Does Age Matter in the Modelling Industry?

By Sharon Rodrigues

In the modelling industry, age is often seen as a defining factor in success. But is this the case? Does age really matter when it comes to becoming a successful model?

There is no denying that ageism exists in the modeling industry. Many casting directors and clients prefer to work with younger models, as they are seen as more “fresh-faced” and “relatable.” The entertainment industry used to view older models out-of-touch. However, this outdated prejudice ignores the wealth of talent and experience that mature actors, models, and other performers bring to projects.

That being said, there are plenty of successful models who are over the age of 30. Naomi Campbell, for example, is one of the most successful models in the world—and she’s 52 years old. Several modelling agencies specialize in representing older models. These agencies recognize that there is a demand for mature models and that they can be just as successful as their younger counterparts.

Age Being An Asset for Modelling

Many people assume that modelling is only for young, up-and-coming individuals, but in reality, age can be a huge asset in the industry. Maturity and experience can add depth and dimension to a model’s portfolio, making them appealing to a wider range of clients and brands. Some campaigns specifically target older demographics, meaning that the “mature” look provided by older models is highly desired. Additionally, having life experience and a great modelling portfolio often allows older models to bring a unique perspective to shoots and runway shows.

From period pieces to mature roles, there are numerous opportunities for seasoned professionals. Ad campaigns targeting baby boomers or retirees often require experienced models who can authentically portray a certain age group. In film and television productions, older stars bring gravitas and life experience to dramatic or comedic roles. And in the realm of voice acting, maturity only adds depth and range to characters. As the industry continues to become more inclusive and diverse, it’s clear that age should never be seen as an impediment to success in modelling.

Today, there are also niche markets such as plus-size modelling that provide exciting opportunities for experienced and confident older models and models of plus-size. Despite the challenges that come with being an older model, there is still a place for individuals of all ages in the industry. It just takes determination and perseverance to break through the barriers and find success.

Challenging Outdated Ideas About Beauty

Despite the ever-present stereotype that youth equals beauty, the fashion industry and fashion modeling are starting to embrace older models. Instead of just being relegated to campaigns for anti-ageing skincare or mature fashion lines, these experienced models are landing high fashion editorials and runway gigs.

They also have a unique opportunity to play strong, confident roles that challenge societal expectations about ageing. From badass superheroes to glamorous CEOs, older models are showing that age is just a number and experience can be just as sexy as a youth.

Both critics and consumers are taking notice, leading to a shift in the representation of older individuals in the fashion world. As our society continues to challenge outdated ideas about beauty, it’s exciting to see the fashion industry follow suit and give older models their due recognition.
